The First Market Power GIVEAWAY
Crazy Patent Story
Today I’m lecturing on patents and innovation. For those who have taken my class, it’s an unforgettable lecture. But recently I’ve worried that I haven’t given the subject proper treatment. Patents have played an important role in the history of innovation, but we might have ruined them.
Here’s an example. I’ve never been to the Midway Ice Castles, but basically every musician on YouTube has, so I’m familiar with how they look. Right now Ice Castles is battling LaBelle Lake Ice Palace in Idaho for patent infringement. I am not kidding when I say that Ice Castles has a patent…on making ice. Here it is.
I’m not an expert in intellectual property, but this seems like a weird battle. Is making ice really something we can patent?
Market Power Giveaway
This week’s video shows how a pair of Nikes can demonstrate so many economic principles (including patents!). As part of the video, I’m actually giving away a pair of Nikes.
