Jobs for economics majors
Before I share some links, just wanted to say thanks to everyone. On July 13, 2019, viewers spent 5 hours watching Market Power. Yesterday, July 13, 2020, viewers watched Market Power for 121 hours. I’m really proud of that growth. Thanks for everyone supporting the channel.
Are there jobs for economics majors?
I’m trying to write more, so this last week I wrote on a question I get all the time, “Can I get a job if I major in economics?” I mentioned this question in my video on the biggest lies about majoring in economics, but I’ve added some new details. Most importantly, it has models! If you want to read about the Home Depot model vs the library model, read it here.
Venezuelan Poverty
One of the ways I try to get people interested in my research in Haiti is to remind them that Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Well. It was.
New data released last week revealed that Venezuela is now the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and nearly the poorest in the world. The average Venezuelan 75 cents a day, and 96% of the country lives in poverty.
What’s crazy is that Venezuela used to be one of the richest countries in the world! The demise is a combination of two factors: reliance on oil and the depressing effects of socialism.
Harry Potter Bet
A few weeks ago I was researching my video on presidential betting markets. During that research, I came across a story of people betting on the ending of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Thousands of people placed bets, but because of an incomplete contract, a company lost $125,000. Surprisingly, this is relevant for what’s happening today during the pandemic! Check it out.
