I wish I did this
The theme of this week’s email is “things I wish I did.”
#1 in the Nation
For example, a guy got his movie to be the number one box office in the nation by renting out a theater. The economics of it are genius! There are (essentially) no movies playing in theaters. So this guy made a short movie with no budget then rented a theater for the day. Since no other movies were showing, this guy was #1.
I wish I had known it was that easy to do. Now I’m wondering which other opportunities there are.
Free Economic History Course
If you like economic history (which I know you all do!), then you should check out this free economic history course online. Basically it’s a podcast, but the guests are all top notch and speaking on topics related to economic/science history. I wish I had been introduced to economic history earlier.
Advice for ambitious youth
Another thing I wish I did 10-15 years ago was understand how the internet opens so many doors. I should have learned more. I should have made more friends.
One person who has taken amazing advantage of her resources is Laura Deming. She’s 26 years old and running a multimillion dollar venture fund.
Well she has some advice for ambitious teenagers. But I don’t think it’s limited to teenagers. There’s no reason to not follow it now. Here are her three points:
Learn a lot about fields that speak to you
Build something excellent
Learn how to manage yourself
She goes into more detail at the above link.
Why I chose Economics
Some of you have heard the story of how Wall-E led me to major in economics. But maybe not all. This week’s video tells my journey of loving economics, then deciding not to pursue it, and finally how Wall-E helped me out.
